You've probably heard the phrase "sitting is the new smoking". And chances are, you're doing your best to stay active throughout the day, but you may find yourself in situations where you are almost forced to sit for long periods of time. Still, there are times when sitting is unavoidable- whether you're working a desk job, attending a conference or class, traveling by car, train, or plane, or even navigating life as a new parent. In these situations, getting creative with how you move is essential. The key is to be prepared!
If you've been following along for awhile, you already know the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle. (New here? You can always catch up on past newsletters by clicking "view in browser" from this email.) A lack of physical activity is linked to increased risks of death, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and various types of cancer. It can also lead to poor posture, back, neck, and hip pain, fatigue, lack of focus, and even decreased creativity.
You might already avoid the classic couch traps like Netflix binges and endless social media scrolling- but what about unavoidable sedentary time like sitting at a computer all day?
Try the 28-8-2 Rule
One strategy worth trying is the 28-8-2 rule, created by Dr. Alan Hedge, a professor of ergonomics at Cornell University. The concept is simple:
- Sit for 20 minutes
- Stand for 8 minutes
- Move for 2 minutes
This gentle rhythm is a great way to restore balance when you're stuck sitting for hours. While standing desks and walking pads are excellent long-term solutions, they aren't always immediately practical. The 28-8-2 rule is easy, safe, and helps improve circulation and metabolism without major changes to your setup. Anyone can incorporate this habit- and benefit from it.
Count Those Steps
Another effective approach? Track your daily steps. First, figure out your baseline using a pedometer, smartphone, or smartwatch. Then, gradually increase your steps until you are hitting at least 10,000 steps per day. If you're starting at 3,000 to 4,000, this might take time- but once 10,000 becomes your new normal, feel free to go beyond it! Trust me- no one's going to say you're moving too much. If your day includes long periods of sitting, you may need to make up for it during the rest of the day- and that's okay!
A great bonus of wearing a smartwatch is that once you set your goal and input your typical waking hours, the app does the math for you. It'll tell you how many steps you need each hour and give you a gentle buzz to remind you when it's time to move. That little nudge? It could be a literal lifesaver.
