Enjoy the Summer You've Built

Over the past month, we've discussed adapting our routines, navigating vacations, and holding on to the habits that keep us grounded when life gets busy. As we wrap up June, I'd like to leave you with one final thought.

Don't forget to enjoy the life your healthy habits have helped create.

It's easy to spend all of our time chasing the next goal. We want to lose another five pounds, lift a little heavier, walk a little farther, or improve our pace. There's certainly nothing wrong with continuing to grow, but every once in a while it's worth looking around and appreciating how far you've already come.

Whether you've spent the last several months making healthier choices or you've been building these habits for years, remember that the habits themselves aren't the destination. They're simply the vehicle that allows you to live the life you want.

Health gives you options. It gives us the energy to travel without feeling exhausted before the trip is over. It allows us to hike a trail we've never explored, spend the afternoon swimming with our grandchildren, work in the garden without our backs giving out after fifteen minutes, or simply enjoy a long walk with someone we love.

Those moments are the reward. Good health gives us the freedom to say "yes" to those experiences instead of watching from the sidelines.

Next month, my family and I are taking an old-fashioned road trip to Kentucky. Like most of our vacations, it probably won't involve much sitting around, with the exception of travel days. We'll spend our days hiking, whitewater rafting, exploring whatever adventures the area has to offer, and seeing as much as we can.

As I think about this trip, I'm reminded how thankful I am for the habits I've built over the years. The daily walks, strength training, paying attention to nutrition, consistent sleep routine, and taking care of my body aren't things I do just so I can cross them off a checklist. I do them because they allow me to enjoy and fully participate in the activities that are important to me without worrying whether my body can keep up.

To me, that's what health and wellness is really about. I don't exercise so I can exercise better. I exercise so I can live better.

It's not about restriction. It's about freedom. The freedom to say yes when adventure calls. The freedom to keep up with your kids or grandkids. The freedom to work in your yard, explore a new city, paddle a kayak, climb a hill, or carry your own suitcase through the airport without thinking twice.

Those freedoms are built one ordinary day at a time through choices we make long before vacation ever arrives.

Of course, none of us are perfect. Even on vacation there will be days when you don't get your usual workout or your nutrition isn't exactly what it is at home. That's okay. You've heard me say it before: consistency matters far more than perfection. A week away doesn't erase months (or years) of good habits.

So wherever this summer takes you, I hope you'll take advantage of what you've been working toward. Go for the walk. Swim with your grandkids. Take the hiking trail. Plant the garden. Explore a new town. Try something you've never done before. Make the memories your healthy habits have made possible.

Healthy habits aren't meant to make life smaller by filling it with rules and to-do lists. They're meant to make life bigger by giving you the strength, energy, and confidence to fully participate in it.

Thank you for letting me be a small part of your wellness journey. I appreciate every one of you, and I look forward to continuing that journey together. See you in July!
