Many of you have shared your 2025 goals with me and I am excited to tell you that improving mind health is becoming an increasingly more prevalent objective than in years past. This is encouraging to me because it counts as another so-called non-scale victory. Things like having more energy, getting better sleep, and experiencing less anxiety are huge motivators. These kinds of goals are so important to add to the list of qualities and attributes you need to have to be the future you that you imagine. And ultimately, when your body is operating at it's best, your brain can operate at full capacity as well.
Believe it or not, exercise causes profound changes, not just on the outside, but on the inside, too. Hopefully you have noticed some of these modifications before firsthand. These changes to your brain or ability to grow new neurons, called neurogenesis, positively affects creativity, cognition, mood, and confidence, among others. Think about it, your brain oversees all of the operations that your body performs, right? Therefore your body is technically the boss. Physical activity is essential to the brain and it won't function properly without it.
Obviously, exercise promotes the increase of cerebral blood flow, but also elevates certain hormones and chemicals improving the way you think while increasing problem solving skills, creativity, memory, and learning. They also offer some protection against neurodegenerative diseases. And these results are being found across species! I love stuff like this! This interconnectedness amazes, inspires, and motivates me. Our potential as human beings is truly limitless.
If training the body changes the brain which in turn affects the mind, there is no reason to delay. Plan a strength training session or take a walk. Sign up for a class, any class, or take a bike ride. Schedule something right now while you are thinking about it. Get it on your calendar. Or have some of your snacks! Building a strong, powerful, and agile body will enhance and strengthen both the brain and the mind.
