Habits & Consistency

Make Room for What Matters

As we move into November, our calendars can start filling up pretty quickly. There are holiday preparations, family gatherings, work commitments, and all the usual responsibilities that don't magically disappear just because it's a busy time of year. Before we know it, we're running from one thing to the next, wondering where the time went. I've always had a hard time sitting still without feeling like I should be doing something productive. I'm not a fan of idleness, and recently, while studying Proverbs again, I found myself paying particular attention to the passages about work, diligence, and idleness. There's certainly value in working hard and being responsible, but it also got me thinking about the difference between being productive and simply being busy. Sometimes we fill our days with activity without accomplishing much of what actually matters. We keep moving, checking things off the list, and finding more things to do, yet we may be neglecting the very things that help us feel and function at our best. Busyness can become a habit all its own, and it doesn't necessarily mean we're spending our time wisely. So let me ask you this: What matters most to you, and are you making room for it? I would hope your health is somewhere near the top of that list. Yet exercise is often one of the first things to get pushed aside when life gets hectic. We tell ourselves we'll walk tomorrow, lift weights when things settle down, or stretch when we have a few extra minutes. Before long, the days turn into weeks, and the habits that help us feel strong and capable have taken a back seat to everything else demanding our attention. Your nutrition deserves that same consideration. If your dogs and your kids are eating better than you are, we need to talk! And believe me, I'm guilty of this myself. I am the queen of eating on the run, or, at best, standing at the kitchen counter while doing something else. I often drink a shake while setting up for class in the morning and grab whatever sustenance I can manage in the car on my way to a client's house. We all have to-do lists a mile long, and I understand that sitting down to enjoy a leisurely meal isn't always realistic. But that doesn't mean we have to leave our nutrition to chance. Our bodies need fuel to provide energy, support recovery, and keep us functioning well. What we eat, and how consistently we nourish ourselves, matters. Maybe the first step is taking a little time to think about what your body actually needs right now. Are you getting enough protein and fiber? Are your meals supporting your energy throughout the day? Are you giving yourself the nutrients you need to recover from your workouts and manage the demands of daily life? Then consider how you can make those choices easier, even when your schedule isn't cooperating. You may not have time to prepare an elaborate lunch or sit down at the table for every meal, but you can plan ahead. Keep nutritious snacks available. Prepare a few meals in advance. Have something nourishing ready to grab instead of routinely relying on energy drinks, specialty coffees, or ultra-processed convenience foods to get you through the day. A little preparation can go a long way toward making the better choice the easier choice. And this isn't just about food and exercise. Sleep, recovery, relationships, and time spent with the people you love deserve space on your calendar, too. If we're constantly rushing from one obligation to another, we can miss out on the very things we're working so hard to provide for ourselves and our families. I'm not suggesting that we can always fit everything in or that a well-organized schedule will magically solve every time constraint. Life happens, responsibilities are real, and some seasons are simply more demanding than others. But I do think it's worth looking honestly at how we're spending our time and asking whether our daily choices reflect our priorities. As you move through this month, consider what you might need to make a little more room for. Maybe it's movement, better meal planning, more sleep, or simply being present when you're with the people who matter to you. You don't have to overhaul your entire schedule. Start by identifying one thing that's important to your well-being and deciding how you'll protect a little time for it. We can't always control how busy life gets, but we can be more intentional about what we allow that busyness to crowd out. Taking care of yourself isn't another item to squeeze onto an already impossible to-do list. It's part of making sure you have the energy, strength, and health to keep showing up for the life and the people you care about. So, what matters most to you? And are you making room for it?
